Ian Van Deventer, CCC, provides counselling in Chilliwack, BC, with over 25 years of experience in social work and clinical counselling. Drawing from attachment, systems, narrative therapy, EMDR, and CBT, he helps clients explore emotional patterns, trauma, and relationship challenges with warmth and steadiness. Ian brings a deeply human, nonjudgmental presence to his work, guiding clients toward healing and growth with empathy and calm professionalism

My career began in the social sciences, earning a Bachelor of Arts from The King’s University and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary. For over 25 years, I have worked as a social worker in both front-line and clinical supervisory roles. My lifelong interest in healing and growth led me to complete a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University, expanding my work to include clinical counselling in Chilliwack, BC.

I believe that who we are and how we function in the world is deeply shaped by our early life experiences and the family and social environments in which we grow up. At the same time, I hold a strong belief in human resilience — that people can recover, heal, and grow even after difficult or traumatic experiences.

My work aligns naturally with Attachment, Systems, and Narrative approaches to therapy. I also take a flexible and practical approach, drawing on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Brief Solution-Focused Therapy when appropriate. You can learn more about these therapeutic approaches on our Therapy Options page.

I have received training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, an evidence-based approach often used in trauma counselling. As part of my work at Yale Therapy Group in Chilliwack, I integrate EMDR with attachment-informed and relational approaches to support clients experiencing trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress.

I am also an approved service provider for the Crime Victims’ Assistance Program (CVAP), offering counselling support to individuals navigating the impact of crime and traumatic events.

Perhaps the most important thing I bring as a counsellor is the ability to sit with people in their pain or struggle without becoming overwhelmed by it. I offer a non-judgmental, relational approach that fosters safety, curiosity, and meaningful growth.

Areas of particular interest to me include family of origin issues, anger and emotional regulation, relationship conflict or violence, addiction recovery, anxiety, and depression. I value meeting people where they are — working collaboratively on whatever issues feel most meaningful in their lives.

On a personal note, my spouse and I feel grateful to have three young adult children and a teenager. I also enjoy reading and exploring the outdoors in the beautiful Chilliwack area we call home.

I am currently seeing clients in person and online at Yale Therapy Group in Chilliwack on Monday afternoons and evenings. For details about scheduling an introductory consultation or first session, please visit our Booking & Office Information page or contact me using the link below.
