Ian is a Canadian Certified Counsellor with over 25 years of experience in social work and counselling. Drawing from attachment, systems, and narrative approaches, he helps clients explore the roots of their emotional patterns and relationships with warmth, clarity, and steadiness. Ian brings a deeply human, nonjudgmental presence to his work, guiding clients through healing and growth with empathy and calm professionalism.

My career started with studying the social sciences, resulting in a Bachelor of Arts from The King’s University and a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary. For the past 25+ years, I have been working as a social worker in various front-line and clinical supervisory roles. My lifelong interest in healing and growth led me to pursue a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Trinity Western University, expanding my work to include clinical counselling.

I believe that who we are and how we function in the world is heavily influenced by our early life experiences and the family and social environments we grow up in. I also believe human beings are resilient and can recover and grow despite difficult experiences.

My work naturally aligns with Attachment, Systems, and Narrative schools of thought, but I also take a flexible and practical approach that draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Brief Solution-Focused Therapy when appropriate.

I have received training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, and I am an approved service provider for the Crime Victims’ Assistance Program (CVAP).

Perhaps the most important thing I bring as a counsellor is the ability to sit with people in their pain or struggle without becoming overwhelmed by it. I offer a non-judgmental and relational approach that fosters safety, curiosity, and growth.

Areas that are of particular interest to me include family of origin issues, anger (and other emotions), relationship discord or violence, addiction, anxiety, and depression. I am a general practitioner at heart and value meeting people where they are — working collaboratively on whatever issues feel most meaningful to them.

On a personal note, my spouse and I consider ourselves blessed to have three young adult children and a teenager. I also love to spend time reading a good book or exploring the outdoors in this beautiful area we live in.

I am currently seeing clients (in person or online) at Yale Therapy Group in Chilliwack part-time on Monday afternoons and evenings. Please send me an email at the link below for details about setting up an introductory consultation or a first session.
