Dawn is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with over four decades of experience helping clients navigate life’s challenges with compassion and clarity. Grounded in empathy and guided by the principle “Seek first to understand, then to be understood,” she provides a safe, supportive space where clients can reflect, heal, and grow. Through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and talk therapy, Dawn helps clients find light in difficult sessions and rediscover strength and hope in themselves.

As a counsellor, my mantra (taken from author Steven Covey) is “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” The best gift a counsellor can give another person is to listen to their story. By encouraging individuals to consider their options and assisting them in forming an action plan best suited to their goals, a counsellor can help you move forward in life.

I have personally experienced depression and anxiety. I know what it’s like to be in a dark tunnel where you don’t see the light and wonder, “What is the point?” Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)—often referred to as the gold standard of psychotherapy—is a primary area of my expertise. The concept of CBT is grounded in the understanding that your thoughts and behaviours affect your emotional well-being and physical health.

I also incorporate mindfulness into my practice. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other techniques to calm the body and mind, helping to reduce stress and build resilience.

As a founding member of the Ann Davis Transition House in Chilliwack, I have many years of experience counselling women, children, and men impacted by emotional, physical, verbal, and sexual abuse.

As a mother of a child born with serious medical problems, I spent years in and out of hospitals—advocating, learning, and fighting to be heard. I deeply understand the impact a serious diagnosis can have on both the patient and the family, an experience that inspired me to write The Heart of Joshua, which explores these challenges.

Change is difficult for many people. We often resist it until the pain of staying the same outweighs the discomfort of growth. I understand how overwhelming life transitions can be, and I support clients as they navigate new chapters through talk therapy, providing a safe space to explore emotions triggered by daily stressors, relationships, mental health challenges, grief, or trauma.

Remember — who you are today doesn’t have to be who you are tomorrow. Your story matters, and the tools you learn in counselling can help you see your worth and recognize that you are not alone. That is the heart of therapy.
